Ko Hong, or Hong Island, can easily be the most famous and visited of all of Krabi’s famous islands. It is not too far from the shores, and that means you can almost visit the island all year. But believe me, the rainy season is not good for any island, no matter how beautiful it is.
The best time to be there is from November to April each year. Other months are subject to rain and storms. We were there just before May, and the weather was relatively nice and bright. Lucky us.
Ko Hong is a part of the Than Bok Khorani National Park in Krabi. You will need to pay the entrance fees and comply with the park’s regulations. The island now has a new attraction, which is the viewpoint that winds 109 metres up to the top of a cliff. There, one can see all the surrounding islands, including the famous ‘Pa Ko‘ – a cluster of small islands that make Phang Nga Bay super famous.
Completed in 2020, after the first relaxation of tourism after COVID, the viewpoint also serves as the evacuation route should there be a tsunami situation. The thing is, climbing to the top of the viewpoint takes quite a lot of energy and will. It was exhausting. And the sun was no joke. Expect the worst because it is a steep climb all the way through, but there are six rest areas spread throughout as well.
